Support claims with evidence: do the reasons carry the conclusion?
Separate the claim, evidence and reasoning, then check whether the conclusion overreaches.
Start with a checkable claim
“This plan is good” does not specify the benefit. Try “Run a two-week trial to check whether waiting time decreases.” Facts, explanations and recommendations need different support. Recommendations also involve costs, constraints and tradeoffs; one number cannot settle them.
Say which part the evidence supports
Reported convenience can support “some respondents expressed a preference,” not “everyone benefits.” Record the source, population, time and measure. Leave missing support unchecked rather than filling it with fluent wording.
Fictional case: after a booking option was added, average waiting time in ten observations changed from 18 to 12 minutes. Observation periods and visitor counts differed. Report the observed values, but do not directly attribute the change to booking or guarantee improvement at all times.
Make the reasoning explicit
A small trial may still be reasonable if costs are bounded and it can improve comparison data. Explain the evaluation plan. That is an action under uncertainty, not established causation. Show the assumptions between evidence and recommendation.
Look for information that would change the conclusion
State the strongest alternative explanation or counterexample and what would make you narrow, revise or withdraw the claim. Objections need not have equal weight, but do not collect only favorable examples.
Self-check: which revision is better supported?
“Booking cut waiting time by a third” exceeds this case’s evidence. “Observed means changed from 18 to 12 minutes, but conditions differed; comparable observations are needed to test booking’s role” preserves both numbers and limits.
