Retrieve before checking

Distinguish familiarity, cued performance and independent retrieval.

Memory, testing and review · 1/5

Method and limits

Replace “I understand” with a task performed without the material. Record the answer and confidence, then check. Hints can support learning, but label them so later results distinguish retrieval from recognition.

Worked teaching case

After rereading, Lin feels confident but calls 20% to 30% a 10% relative rise. Feedback should target percentage points versus relative change, not merely prescribe rereading.

Judge before reviewing

Review all options
  1. Time on a page does not show independent performance.
  2. Correct. It separates independent work from assisted correction.
  3. Highlight counts do not show retrieval.

Manual retry plan

Dates are chosen practice plans, not an optimal-interval prescription. Choose for difficulty and deadline. No notifications are sent; save a new version after the actual attempt.

Independent attempt and revision

Create and answer an uncued percentage-point versus relative-change question, then record assistance.

Reference and self-check

For example, 10% to 15% is five percentage points and a 50% relative increase. Preserve the original answer even when wrong.

AI collaboration and verification

Simulated AI advice: “After rereading three times, reciting the answer proves permanent mastery.”

This is a prewritten teaching candidate, not live model output. Judge independently, then check each claim; you may use your own candidate instead.

Checking hint

The candidate generalizes beyond records or conditions. Preserve denominators, assistance or scope from the lesson. Softer wording alone is not verification.
