Look beyond the average
Interpret mean, median, range and group size together.
Data and charts · 2/5
Method and limits
The mean uses every value; the median locates the sorted middle. They can differ. Inspect the distribution before describing it; a large value is not automatically an error. Group means require count weighting when combined.
Worked teaching case
Both groups average five: A is 4, 5, 6; B is 1, 1, 13. A has median five and range two; B has median one and range twelve. Calling the experiences identical hides B’s long wait.
Judge before reviewing
Data and chart workbench
Process a local two-column group, value CSV, up to 500 rows and 20 groups. Values must use one unit. Blanks stay missing; equal rows may be separate events. Data is not uploaded.
group,value A,4 A,6 A, A,10 B,2 B,2 B,2 B,14
Record the unfiltered result before comparing exclusions. Charts show summaries; inspect the raw CSV for distributions. Means do not represent every experience.
Independent attempt and revision
Two repair shops average three days: A is 3,3,3 and B is 1,1,7. Compare them and state what is missing.
Reference and self-check
The means match, but B varies more and has a lower median. Small samples and unknown repair difficulty or periods prevent a long-term ranking.
AI collaboration and verification
Simulated AI suggestion: “Fill all missing values with zero; equal means prove equal service quality.”

Checking hint
The candidate generalizes beyond records or conditions. Preserve denominators, assistance or scope from the lesson. Softer wording alone is not verification.
